On June 26, 1976, Air France flight 139 was hijacked en route from
Athens, Greece to Paris, France. It was hijacked by 8 members of the
PLO and 2 members of the Baader-Meinhoff group. The plane was allowed to
land in Entebbe, Uganda by the leader of the country at the time, Idi
Amin. When the plane laned in Uganda, all the passengers except for the
Israelis and Jews were released. The captain of the aircraft stayed behind
with the passengers along with his crew.

The terrorists threated to kill the hostages if certain demands were not
met. This prompted the Israelis to plan a daring raid involving 4
C-130 transports, some jeeps and a Mercedes. The Mercedes was used because
it would make the Ugandans think a General was strolling by. The Israeli
forces involved were members of the Sayeret Maktal (an elite IDF unit) and
Paratroopers.

The raid itself lasted about 3 minutes in which time 6 of the terrorists were
killed, 3 of the hostages and 1 Israeli (Col. Yonni Netanyahu brother of the
man that would become Prime Minister). Approximately 45 Ugandan troops were
killed as well.

This raid would become a defining moment in the War on Terror.
