With our troops still in the field, Memorial Day takes on even more meaning
as we remember those troops that fell in the past.

I'm not sure where the tradition of folding the flag in a triangular fashion
began. They say it's commeration of the Tri-Corner hat of the Revolutionary
War soldiers, but I haven't seen that official anywhere.

The custom of the 21 gun salute started as a nod to an ancient tradition
of placing weapons in a place where they couldn't be used. This continued
in the gun age because a fired gun was no longer useful since they carried
only 1 shot. This tradition started with 7 guns and expanded to 21. The
21 gun salute wasn't officially adopted in the US until 1875. Until that
point, the salute was always based on the number of States.
