The modern shotgun has been used by the US military since World War I (maybe 
earlier).  It is a weapon that was suited for the close quarters of some of 
the trench fighting.  It also found use in parts of Europe (especially by
MPs guarding German prisoners) and the jungles of the Pacific.

In Vietnam it was called into service again.  Some of the firefights occurred
in pretty close quarters and the shotgun was very useful there.
