Bay City, Michigan

I was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan with a brief time away as my
dad was serving in the Navy until I was in kindergarten. I never realized
the beauty of some of the architecture of the city.

The crown jewel of the city is probably City Hall. It is a pretty
magnificent structure and I'm glad that Bay City didn't succumb to the same
thing that alot of other cities did and demolished the structure for the
bland architecture of the 1960's and 1970's (they almost did but didn't have
the money at the time).

This is a shot of the corner of the building. You can see the clock tower
which pretty much towers over the rest of the city because there just aren't
that many tall buildings.

This is a shot as you are looking up. The clock was restored some time in
the early 80's. I think you can ask to go inside the tower and get a pretty
good view of the city.

This is another shot of the clock tower.

This is one of my favorite shots of City Hall. I've taken several versions of
this shot all which date back to when I was taking photography in High School.
I think it looks really neat in black and white.

This is a frieze representing some of the past industries of Bay City. The
biggest of which was probably lumbering. Back in the late 1800's, Bay City
was a huge lumbering and sawmill town as it stands at the base of the
Saginaw River. I think at one time Bay City was larger than Saginaw or
Detroit.

These are some shots of City Hall in the fog.

This is the Bay County building. This was built in the 1930's and houses
the Bay County offices and courthouse.

Because of the Saginaw River, Bay City has several bridges. This is a
railroad bridge that is sort of near the middle of town. On one side of
this bridge used to be the Defoe Shipyards.

This is the Appledore. Bay City used to be a major shipbuilding city. It
built many of the ships that plied the Great Lakes. It also built several
ships for the US Navy during World War II and a little bit after. That
died down after the Navy didn't want to pay the expense for moving the ships
through the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Another boat on the Saginaw River.

This is Saint Stanlisaus Church. Bay City used to have a large Polish
population.

This is the former Brown-Hoist Building. Bay City used to have a huge
industrial base. Sadly, those days are gone. There are still a few
industries in the city but not nearly as many as there used to be.

This is part of a memorial to the Vietnam veterans of Bay County.

This is the same memorial in thefog.

This is in one of the Bay City cemetaries. It is an old Navy anti-aircraft
gun.

Now Bay City is more of a tourist destination than anything.

I will add more pictures of Bay City and the surrounding area as I take
them.

Thanks.
